We’re sure we don’t really need to tell you this, but home security is absolutely paramount to your own personal safety. As providers of security services in Bristol, we know all too well how investing in security equipment can help to keep you safe. However, one of the things that our alarms cannot protect you from is doorstep scam artists. This is why we have put together a guide on how to spot these scammers before it’s too late.
Rogue Traders
Rogue traders are scam artists who will come to your door and offer you services that you probably don’t need, and then they will charge extortionate prices for their ‘services’. If you have someone come to your door and offer you home improvements or repairs, take a moment to think about whether this is something you really need. Don’t sign anything or hand over any money there and then; it can be easy to be persuaded if you haven’t been given time to think about it.
Fake Officials
Another way scam artists work is by pretending to be some sort of official so they can gain access to your home. They may claim to be a gasman who’s there to read the meter, or mention any number of official roles in an attempt to gain your trust. Always ask to see an identification card, and if in doubt, call your utilities provider to check their identity. Most utilities providers will also have a password scheme, so you can use this to make sure they are genuine.
Consumer Surveys
You may have had someone knock at your door and ask you to take a few minutes to answer a few questions. Of course, the majority of these callers will be genuine, but some scam artists are using this as a cover to get information out of you or to get you to buy or sign up for something. They must carry an identification card, so ask to see it, and if in doubt, phone the company they are from. If they ask you for information that you feel is inappropriate, don’t answer and ask them to leave. Remember, if you are in doubt or are worried about your safety, call the police. Here at BWS Security, our top priority is your security, which is why we stock a wide range of security products that are designed to ensure your safety.
